About the Alliance
Professor Yung Chang’s research team has developed a series of zwitterionic polymers and copolymers based on the sulfobetaine chemistry. The team’s work encompasses fundamental investigations of physicochemical properties, the development of novel synthesis and fabrication methods, and the translation of these materials into six medical application areas, including advanced wound dressings, anti-bacterial dental materials, blood cell separation membranes, cardiovascular stents, and drug delivery systems for cancer therapy, as illustrated below.
Studies conducted over the past several years have indicated that the inherently bioinert structures of phosphobetaine- and sulfobetaine-based materials may limit their broader functional applications. Consequently, carboxybetaine-based zwitterionic polymers and copolymers have received increasing attention in recent years. Their carboxyl (–COOH) groups enable the covalent conjugation of biomolecules, substantially expanding the applicability of zwitterionic material systems in biospecific recognition and other biofunctional applications.

Industrial Applications of Zwitterionic Technology
Zwitterionic technology plays a pivotal role in industrial development, primarily manifested across the following dimensions:
1.Enhanced resistance to biofouling: Zwitterionic materials contain both positively and negatively charged groups, enabling them to form a strongly hydrated surface layer that effectively inhibits microbial adhesion and proliferation. This property is particularly valuable in medical devices, food packaging, and water treatment, where it can reduce the risk of biological contamination and improve product hygiene and safety.
2.Improved stain resistance (antifouling performance): The unique structure of zwitterionic materials helps minimize the adhesion of contaminants and particulates to material surfaces, thereby enhancing their resistance to fouling and staining. This is especially beneficial for construction materials, textiles, and automotive coatings, as it can reduce cleaning and maintenance frequency and lower operating costs.
3.Enhanced biocompatibility: Zwitterionic technology can improve the biocompatibility of materials by promoting more favorable interactions with biological systems while reducing immune rejection and inflammatory responses. This is particularly important in biomedical applications, where it can minimize adverse tissue reactions around implants and improve the success rate of implanted medical devices.
4.Applications in nanotechnology: Zwitterionic technology is widely used in the preparation and functionalization of nanomaterials. Zwitterionic polymers can be incorporated into nanoparticles and nanocolloidal systems for applications such as drug delivery, while also improving the colloidal stability and biological performance of nanomaterials.
5.Environmental sustainability: Many zwitterionic treatment strategies offer more environmentally responsible alternatives to conventional surface-treatment methods and can reduce the use of hazardous organic compounds and heavy metals. These advantages support sustainable development goals and facilitate the growth of environmentally conscious industries.
In terms of industrial processes, collaborations can be established through functionalized technical designs to address various product and process improvements and performance enhancements. Different substrates or polymer interfaces can be functionalized using:
- Coating technologies
- Grafting technologies
- Blending technologies
Overall, zwitterionic technology offers substantial potential for enhancing material surface properties, reducing biological fouling, improving biocompatibility, and advancing nanotechnology applications. Its versatility and performance benefits make it highly relevant to innovation and development across a broad range of industries.
